Description

Feedback on Beta v0.9 from Eva Borbas (U. Wisconsin).

No immediate issues or problems are raised, though I have noted in reply the the available compilers are unsupported or not recommended for ROPP.

No action re ROPP-1 release required from this tester's feeback.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Sorry for the delay.

1) Have you downloaded the v0.9 Beta packages?

Yes

- if no, do you intend to do so in the near future?

- if still no, do you no longer wish to be a beta tester?

- if yes, which ones?
  TOOLS
  IO
  FM
  1DVAR
  Documentation (User Guide, Overview, README...)

All

2) What platform (operating system) and compiler(s) are
you using, or intend to use, for the beta testing?

Test on a 32-bit linux machine:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dell Precision 650N
Processor: 2 x 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processors
Memory: 2 GB RAM

Uname –a:
Linux lilly 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp #1 SMP Thu Jan 5 17:13:01 EST 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
cat /etc/redhat-release:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 4 (Nahant Update 2)

3) What platform (operating system) and compiler(s) do you
intend to use for an operational implementation ?

g77, ifc (version 8.0)or g95

g77 –v:
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc/i386-redhat-linux/3.4.4/specs
Configured with: ../configure --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --enable-shared --enable-threads=posix --disable-checking --with-system-zlib --enable-__cxa_atexit --disable-libunwind-exceptions --enable-java-awt=gtk --host=i386-redhat-linux
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.4.4 20050721 (Red Hat 3.4.4-2

4) Have you built/installed the downloaded packages?

- if no, was this because there were problems in the ROPP build
itself, or in installing 3rd party dependency packages?

I got the message when I wanted to install IO part:

checking for Fortran module typesizes... no
configure: error: The typesizes module is required for this library / program.

While installing the tools I got a "no" for this typesizes module, but no error
message and the module was created in the include library.

- if yes, did it go smoothly, or did you have to modify anything?
(And if so, what did you do to correct the problem?)

5) Have you run any of the test scripts supplied with the packages?
If so, which ones, and with what result?

Not, yet.

6) Have you reviewed how you would plan use the package an operational
environment?

- using the package tools as they are? Which application tools do
  you plan to use?

- porting (parts of) the code to use as callable subroutines
in your own applications? Which top-level routines would you
  use?

I think, I would use the callable subroutines.

7) Is the documentation adequate to describe:

- the overview of the packages and their functions
yes, adequate, clear

- the build/install/test system and usage

It would be useful to give some example s of the building ^installation output.

- the code descriptions
yes, clear, very useful

8) Do you have any other comments about the beta package?
What areas need to be improved?

No other comments
