ROPP-10 beta reviewers Christian Marquardt and Leonid Butenko say: 

The same place (<prefix>/share/ropp) could also be used to install the EGM96
coefficient files rather than having the user to have to sort those files him-
or herself. We did not immediately find any reference to these files, actually,
in any README.

Consider for ROPP-11.0. Connection with #685.

(Note, however, that the environment variables GEOPOT_COEF and GEOPOT_CORR are now described in ropp_pp/README.)
