Description
ROPP Work Package WP4510 ("ROPP-10 maintenance") includes
Possible generators of ionospheric data, e.g. TEC, electron density profiles, scintillation maps (depending on the success of other ROM SAF R&D WP activities)
as a possible component of ROPP10.0.
Manuel Hernandez-Pajares, Haixia Lyu and Estel Cardellach at IEEC have developed the SEEIRO algorithm for deriving electron density profiles from RO data. The attached preprint 2019JA026744R_Merged_PDF(1).pdf discusses the method, and the tarball seeiro.zip contains some basic code and data.
More to follow.

Agreed at ROPP CG7 on 06/06/2019 to postpone this to ROPP11.0.

Sean Healy (ECMWF) has come up with an alternative method for retrieving electron density profiles, using familiar 1dvar retrieval ideas. Slides 25 onwards of his presentation at PT22 in Jan 2019 (attached) introduce the idea. Some code snippets are also attached. Compile these with
gfortran test_slant_tec.f90 comp_slant_tec_test.f90 comp_slant_tec_test_tl.f90 -o tslant
Running tslant generates the attached output file tslant.out. See test_slant_tec.f90 for the meanings of these numbers.

Some input from Manuel to the telecon held on 3/7/20 are attached (points_to_answer_to_Kent_regarding_finishing_CDOP3.txt and points_to_answer_to_Kent_regarding_CDOP4_proposal.txt).

At SG-26 in March 2021, it was agreed to defer IEEC ne(r) retrieval code to CDOP4. It was also agreed to forget about the simple code (SEEIRO) and concentrate on the more advanced code (AVHIRO). Sean's method has been incorporated in ROPP-11 (see #700). Moving ticket to ROPP-12 (where it will have to be renamed or replaced).

We decided not to bother with SEEIRO at some point during CDOP3.
